“Marriage is a union, not ownership” — Lady questions why women must change surnames

A lady has ignited an internet conversation by questioning why women are forced to alter their surnames when they marry.

She maintained that marriage, as a partnership, should signify two people coming together as equals, rather than one person deleting their original identity.

She explained that, while custom frequently requires women to take their husbands’ names, this practice has historically positioned women as extensions of their spouses rather than independent persons.

Because it’s tradition doesn’t make it fair or sensible. If a woman wants to take her husband’s name, please take it, but let it be your choice, not something expected by default,” she said.

Social media users swiftly responded with a variety of comments to the post.
