A Nigerian woman who shared her traumatic boarding school experience—which left her infertile—moved many people online.
The woman, who asked not to be named, claimed to have gone to a well-known boarding school in Enugu State.
After her first year, she told her mother she didn’t want to stay at the school because of the negative impacts she saw.
Her parents, however, were unwilling to let her attend a different school.
“…That incident, it repeated a few more times, and that was how life continued. I joined them and we started running things together. The time I went home, I wanted to tell my mom about it to change the school.
My mom refused. Daddy about it, my daddy accepted but my mom refused and it got to a point that my mommy and daddy had to f!ght over it. That my mommy told my daddy that this is not how to train a child. They sent me back again,” she said.
She explained how she was invited to join a group of senior students under the guise of friendship and protection.
She accepted at first, believing it to be harmless. She soon learned, however, that the organization was involved in risky activities.
According to reports, she was coerced into going to a nighttime party, given a drink, and made to have sex with a man.
“I didn’t know what happened but the only thing I could remember was that they gave me a drink and forced me to take it,” she said. “When I woke up, I was bleeding heavily. I didn’t know what happened to me. The girls told me it was my period, but I had never experienced anything like it. I got up, tried to move and I felt a very sharp pain.
The young girl was allegedly forced into more encounters in an attempt to fit in, and the harassment apparently persisted on several occasions.
She later got pregnant while attending school and was told to use risky ways to end the pregnancy.
Serious side effects from the treatment included a foul-smelling discharge and ongoing health issues.
She recounted: “I started having a foul smell. So I told them about it and they said they were going to buy some drugs for me, which they did. When they brought the drugs, I took some of them and the pain did not stop. At this time, water was coming out from my body, from my private area, and the water was smelling so bad. I told them I wanted to go to the hospital. They told me it’s not possible. I started having fever in school. That was how they called my mom to come and carry me from school. I didn’t even know what to tell them what happened to me. When my mom took me to the hospital, the doctor excused my mom to attend to me, to examine me. He asked me what I did. I didn’t tell him, but he told me that whatever I did, that I have to speak up for him to help me. I begged him not to tell my mom about it and he accepted. That was how this doctor told me I’m very beautiful. But because of fear and for the fact that I didn’t want my mom to know about it, I told the doctor that I was his girlfriend, just so he can treat me without telling my mom what was wrong with me. The doctor accepted and treated me. I got some medications. I went for a scan. I was treated. He concealed everything, and after I got better.”
She was later identified with an issue in her womb as a result of the dangerous operations she endured and the incidents at boarding school.
She was still unable to conceive after being married.
I’m still barren. I can’t have a child. This is 10 years later. All because my mom didn’t listen to me. All because my mother fought my daddy for accepting to change school. I just want my story to be out there. I just want people to be vigilant that when my mom accepted to, you know, change my school or even gave me a listening ear, I would not be in this situation right now,” she stated.
