After sharing her thoughts about a birthday present she received from her cousin who lives overseas, a Nigerian woman sparked discussions on social media.

She claims that the cousin had given her ₦200,000 as a birthday present two years prior, skipped it the next year, and then sent it again for her most recent birthday.

She did point out, though, that the economic climate has drastically changed, making the money’s value less significant than it was previously.

She clarified that although she is grateful for the gesture, she feels the amount no longer accurately represents current circumstances, particularly in light of the value of foreign currency.

She also mentioned that she had assisted the cousin’s wife in buying goods from Nigeria, indicating that she was aware of their ability to spend.

“My cousin who lives abroad sent me 200k cash gift on my birthday last two years. he didn’t send last year. Yesterday my birthday he sent 200k again. And I respectfully told him the economy last 2 years is not the same as this years’. 200k naira is less than 200 dollars. I know how much his wife uses in buying wigs from Nigeria through me. I’m not ungrateful or feeling entitled, I just feel he can do more.”
