The Alaafin of Oyo and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, two of the prominent traditional rulers of the South-West, had an unpleasant encounter during a high-profile interfaith gathering in Ibadan, which was captured on camera and went viral.
Governor Seyi Makinde and several high-ranking government officials were present when the tragedy happened on Monday, January 12, 2026, at the Grand Space behind the Oyo State House of Assembly in Agodi, Ibadan.
Attendees were considerably more aware of the occasion because of the high-profile nature of the event.
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja (Arusa I), was seen extending his hand to meet the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade I, in the widely shared video.
But things soon became awkward when the Olubadan allegedly disregarded the Alaafin’s extended hand and went straight to his seat. Reactions to the video on social media have been conflicting.
Some users contended that because of the bustle and commotion, the Olubadan might not have seen the Alaafin’s outstretched hand.
Some, on the other hand, think the act conveyed a deeper message that alludes to long-standing debates over traditional power and hierarchy in the South-West.
