A Nigerian man has shared the inspiring story of a gateman who married an accountant despite earning significantly less than his wife and facing warnings that the relationship might not work.

In a story shared on X (formerly Twitter) by @Mikeliberation, the man revealed that the gateman earned ₦50,000 monthly, while the accountant reportedly earned ₦250,000 — five times his salary.

Couple ignored warnings over income difference

According to the account, people around the gateman advised him against marrying the accountant, arguing that the significant difference in their earnings could create problems in the relationship.

They reportedly warned that the woman might eventually lose respect for him because she earned considerably more than he did.

However, the gateman remained confident in the relationship and insisted that the accountant would accept him regardless of their financial differences.

A few weeks later, the two were reportedly seen going out for lunch together, suggesting that their relationship was becoming more serious.

Not long after, the gateman proposed to the accountant, and she accepted.

The couple subsequently got married in a small wedding ceremony.

Boss surprises couple with promotion

About a month after their wedding, their boss reportedly decided to celebrate the couple by organising a special party for them at the office.

During the celebration, the boss took the microphone and praised the couple for their relationship before announcing a surprise promotion for the gateman.

According to the story, the promotion elevated him to the position of assistant manager and increased his salary from ₦50,000 to ₦400,000.

The boss announced:> “I haven’t seen this kind of love story before. To appreciate our gateman, he has been promoted to assistant manager,”

The salary increase meant that the man who initially earned one-fifth of his wife’s salary would now earn ₦150,000 more than her reported previous salary.

The story has since attracted attention online, with many people highlighting the couple’s decision to pursue their relationship despite their initial difference in income and the concerns raised by those around them.
