2027 Election: Why people are plotting to unseat Tinubu – Defence Minister

Nigeria’s democratic stability is threatened by attempts to remove President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, according to Bello Matawalle, Minister of State for Defence.

Speaking on Saturday at his Abuja home, Matawalle warned that early political plotting and internal power struggles meant to undermine the current administration might sabotage ongoing reforms and threaten national cohesion.

He emphasised that reorienting Nigeria towards economic recovery, stronger institutions, and enhanced national cohesion would depend on President Tinubu’s style of governance and policy direction.

“President Tinubu has taken bold steps to stabilise the economy and strengthen national institutions. Those plotting to unseat him are motivated by personal interests rather than the public good.

If allowed to complete his reform programme, I am confident the President will win convincingly in 2027,” he said.

Matawalle expressed hope that President Tinubu would win the 2027 presidential election handily, citing the increasing national influence of his administration’s policies.

He pointed out that the North has made great strides, especially in the areas of institutional development, security operations, and governance changes.

Nigerians and political leaders were asked by the defence minister to back the administration’s reform plan.

He emphasised that the nation’s collective interest must take precedence over individual goals and urged political stakeholders to promote communication and cooperation over discord.

Additionally, he urged people to support government programmes that promote long-term economic growth, improve security, and fortify national unity.

“Rather than engaging in rancour and short-term political calculations, we should focus on solutions that deliver jobs, security, and stronger institutions for Nigerians,” Matawalle added.
