Uber announces exit from Nigeria after 12 years of operations

Uber, the global ride-hailing business, has announced plans to discontinue operations in Nigeria after 12 years of offering transportation services to consumers across the country.

The corporation announced in a statement on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, that it would cease operations in Nigeria effective immediately following a thorough evaluation of its business.

Uber began operations in Lagos in 2014, and it expressed gratitude to Nigerians for entrusting its platform to connect people with independent transportation providers for everyday commutes, visits to loved ones, and other trips.

Uber noted that its pullout may disturb the routines of users who have relied on the platform for transportation and apologised for any inconvenience.

The firm also promised consumers that its Help Center would be open until September 23, 2026, to help with any final account-related questions.

The announcement has sparked comments from Nigerians, notably users and drivers who have utilised the site since its introduction in the country.

Some users expressed regret with the decision, while others reflected on Uber’s impact on Nigeria’s ride-hailing sector during the last 12 years.
