A Nigerian town is in shock after a smart graduate and both of his parents died within weeks of each other in a series of terrible incidents.

The young man, who had graduated with a first-class degree, was about to finish his service year. He had obtained admission to a master’s course in the United States through his uncle.

Tragically, while flying to Abuja to complete program documentation, he was killed in an accident. “He died on the spot,” an eyewitness recounted. He was our coursemate and one of the brightest. It was devastating news for his family.”

The young man was his parents’ only child, and the news of his death shocked and killed his father.

“When his father received the news, he slumped and died instantly,” the eyewitness added.

Just weeks before the planned funeral, the young man’s mother apparently drank poison and committed suicide. The three were eventually buried on the same day, leaving friends and neighbours to lament the enormous loss.

“On the day of their burial, vanity stopped being a scripture. It became a story I witnessed,” the eyewitness said, reflecting on the emotional weight of the tragedy.

The episode has spurred discussions on mourning, mental health, and the value of emotional support for families struggling with unexpected and multiple deaths.

Residents called for increased awareness and services to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
