A domestic flight grew tense after two passengers argued about an extra seat purchased by a plus-size traveller.
The event reflects continuing debates over personal space and aviation etiquette.
According to online postings, the traveller purposefully purchased two tickets to ensure comfort and prevent inconveniencing others.
During boarding, a mother with a toddler asked whether her child could use the empty seat.
“I paid for both seats so I could sit comfortably. I didn’t want to make anyone else uncomfortable,” the traveler told the flight attendant, explaining her reason for reserving the extra seat.
The mother allegedly complained, asking that the toddler take the seat. The traveller then provided her boarding credentials, demonstrating that she had lawfully secured both seats.
The airline sided with the traveller, allowing her to keep the seat while the toddler stayed on the parent’s lap, which is a usual arrangement for young children.
Despite the resolution, the traveler said she felt uneasy for the rest of the journey. “I noticed disapproving looks and passive-aggressive comments from other passengers. It made the rest of the flight uncomfortable,” she said.
The event has spurred online debate on the rights of customers who buy several seats and the difficulties of combining courtesy and personal comfort.
