After expressing her opinions about University of Lagos (UNILAG) student life, a woman challenged preconceived notions about cultism in higher education and spurred online discussions.
She claimed that UNILAG stands out as an exception to the general belief that cult-related activities exist at all colleges in a comment that has since gone viral.
She claims that rather than violence or covert organisations, the college culture is more focused on social interactions and entrepreneurship. Both students and alumni have responded differently to her comments.
“Everybody is always of the opinion that there are cultists in every university but I don’t know why nobody is coming out to say UNILAG is an exception. UNILAG is more focus on parties and how to make money,” she said.
Since then, the assertion has sparked discussion, with some endorsing her position and others disagreeing, arguing that no organization is completely immune from these problems.
Concerns regarding cultism in Nigerian universities have persisted throughout time, as evidenced by the widely publicised 2022 incident involving student altercations at several institutions throughout the nation.
