“I won’t reduce my age just to get married” — Lady speaks against pressure on women in their 30s

A lady has ignited internet debate by openly refusing cultural pressure to change her age in order to attract marriage.

In a social media video, the lady discussed honesty, self-worth, and the demands placed on women in their thirties.

The now-viral speech underlines continuing disputes in Nigeria about age, marriage, and cultural norms.

Many users responded, with some supporting her position and others questioning her perspectives on relationships and cultural norms.

“I can’t survive three whole decade just to come and reduce my age for you so that you’ll marry me. I will not do it. Oh, you’re telling men your real age, they are not going to marry you, they’ll say that you’re old, I don’t care,” she said.

The woman also questioned traditional notions that associate a woman’s value with marriage, claiming that financial security and personal fulfilment are more important to her.

Similar disputes have erupted in recent years, including a well-publicized 2021 social media movement in which women came out against ageism and marital pressure.

If God said I’m not going to give you a husband in this lifetime, okay, but will I have money? Will I have a soft life? I can’t survive three decades on this earth to reduce it for you so that I’ll be a wife. For what? For why? The plan is for us to get old, so I won’t do it,” she added.
