A woman has ignited internet debate after sharing her encounter with a former flatmate from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The account, published on social media on Wednesday, described how the two’s friendship deteriorated soon after their service year ended, only for the former flatmate to abruptly reconnect with a request for accommodation.
According to the lady, efforts to keep communication after the service year were neglected, including an unreturned birthday message.
“So, my roommate during NYSC stopped talking to me immediately our service year ended. Even when I wished her a happy birthday, she never acknowledged it, so I stopped reaching out. I just accepted that whatever we had ended with service,” she said.
The scenario took an unexpected turn when the former flatmate recently reached out with a personal request, eliciting conflicting reactions from online users who discussed limits and friendship.
“Yesterday, she texted me on WhatsApp saying she’s coming to my hometown to get material for her wedding asoebi and asked if she could spend the night at our family house. Omo, up till now, I never reply. She dey craze” she added.
Similar occurrences have been common in recent years, with many young Nigerians sharing anecdotes of friendships that disappeared after NYSC, only to return when favours were required.
