David Oyedepo, the Founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide, has provoked new emotions after issuing a strong declaration on problems of national ownership and religious dominance in Nigeria.
The comment, which was made during a recent sermon and began trending online on Tuesday, has drew attention from both fans and detractors across social media platforms.
“It is foolish for anybody to think they own Nigeria, who are you? You want to islamise Nigeria? You’re too late.” he said.
The remark has since sparked debate among Nigerians, particularly in light of the country’s long-running discussions about religion, politics, and national identity.
While some have backed the cleric’s position as a reflection of personal belief and religious freedom, others have cautioned against utterances that could exacerbate tensions in a diverse society.
“Except Christ has left heaven, don’t try it cos if you do, it’ll boomerang. No one in Nigeria has a stronger stake than I do,” he reiterated.
Observers point out that similar issues have come up in previous years, particularly during election seasons when religious feelings frequently influence national dialogue and public discourse.
