Following yet another failure of the national grid, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged Nigerians to hold President Bola Ahmed Tinubu responsible for his campaign pledges about power.
In response to claims that the national grid had crashed twice already in January 2026, despite the fact that the year has only just begun, Obi made the plea in a statement posted on his verified X (previously Twitter) handle on Wednesday.
Obi reminded Nigerians of Tinubu’s own comments from his 2022 campaign pledge:
“If I do not provide steady electricity in my first four years, do not vote for me for a second term.”
He noted that the national grid collapsed almost twelve times in 2025 alone, expressing concern that the present reality goes against that promise.
“Yet, in January 2026 alone, the national grid has already collapsed twice, and the month is not even over. This reality sharply contradicts the promise and should worry every patriotic Nigerian,” Obi wrote.
The former governor of Anambra State also lambasted the president’s frequent travels abroad, pointing out that Tinubu is now in Turkey, which has a population of around 87 million, or nearly one-third of Nigeria.
Turkey produces and distributes more than 120,000 megawatts of power, while Nigeria suffers with less than 5% of that capacity, according to Obi, who calls the difference distressing and startling.
He warned that at the current rate, important local concerns go unaddressed and that Nigeria’s leadership should concentrate on solving urgent domestic problems rather than making frequent trips overseas.
In closing, Obi urged Nigerians to change their priorities from the next election to calling for accountability, responsible leadership, and improved government that would lessen the suffering of the populace.
