Mozambique won their first Africa Cup of Nations match, defeating Gabon 3-2 in a thrilling Group F encounter in Agadir on Sunday to keep their qualification chances alive.

Chiquinho Conde’s team combined energy and efficiency, capitalising on key moments to clinch a historic victory despite relentless pressure from Gabon in the latter stages.

The match began at a steady pace, but Mozambique gradually asserted themselves and were more determined in attack.

Their breakthrough came in the 37th minute, when Faisal Bangal headed in Geny Catamo’s corner to put Mozambique ahead.

Momentum shifted drastically in their favour minutes later, when Catamo converted from the penalty spot to make it 2-0, capping an impressive stretch.

Gabon reacted nearly quickly, punishing a costly error by goalkeeper Ernan.

His punch dropped pleasantly for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who finished clinically to close the gap shortly before halftime and tip the balance heading into the break. Mozambique regained control early in the second half.

Seven minutes after the restart, Witi sprinted down the left and sent a precise cross, which Diogo Calila headed home to restore the two-goal lead.

Gabon refused to give up, scoring again in the 77th minute through Alex Moucketou-Moussounda, who reacted quickly after Ernan stopped an initial corner kick attempt.

The last phases were tough, but Mozambique defended with discipline to secure the victory.

Mozambique now sits third in Group F with three points after the win. Gabon remains at the bottom of the rankings, with no points. Mozambique will play Cameroon next, while Gabon must defeat Ivory Coast to keep their campaign alive.
