Former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has released documents alleging that Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde received N50 billion from the federal government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The cash were apparently allocated as a special intervention following the January 2024 explosion in Ibadan.
Fayose provided a memo from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation as confirmation that Makinde had received the considerable funds.
The release occurred after Makinde reportedly asked Fayose to give proof of the supposed federal allocation.
According to Fayose, only N4.5 billion of the N50 billion was really given to the victims of the Ibadan explosion.
He accused Governor Makinde of diverting the remaining funds, alleging that they were instead utilised to further his political goals.
“Two days ago, I said on a national television that Oyo State under Governor Seyi Makinde got a sum of N50bn from the Federal Government as intervention on the January 2024 explosion in Ibadan.
Yesterday, the Governor responded by asking me to provide evidence that he received such money, and here is the evidence he asked for.
“Meanwhile, only N4.5bn was released to victims of the Ibadan Explosion. Rather, he diverted this fund and many others to his Presidential ambition, which is the reason for the crisis in the PDP and his attacks on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his government,” Fayose partly said.
The former governor attributed the alleged budget diversion to conflicts within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He speculated that Makinde’s assaults on President Tinubu and his administration are linked to the financial controversy.
Fayose openly challenged Governor Makinde to pursue legal action against him.
“I dare Governor Seyi Makinde to sue me on this,” he said, adding that he possesses proof of other federal intervention funds received by Oyo State, which the governor has allegedly refused to disclose to the public.
“There are also proofs of other intervention funds from Tinubu’s administration that the Oyo State Government received but did not make public,” Fayose stated.
