“It was the handwork of a few disgruntled fellows in the market and arrests have been made” — Lagos police speaks on protest against Chinese traders

A demonstration at the Trade Fair Market in Lagos involving some traders and Chinese nationals has been characterised by the Lagos State Police Command as the product of a few irate people.

The police commissioner stated that security and tranquillity had been restored in the market after examining the situation. He also mentioned that some of the individuals involved had been detained and questioned.

“It was the handwork of a few miscreants, a few disgruntled fellows in the market, a handful of them that went the other way, and they have been questioned and arrested,” he said.

Residents of Lagos were reassured by him that business operations were proceeding amicably and that there was no altercation at the market.

Mr. Thangozi Emechembe, the president of the market’s trade organization, added that the incident was a little demonstration that was quickly put under control.

He stated that there was no continuous conflict between Chinese and Nigerian vendors at the market and that the association had discussed the matter with the appropriate authorities.

“We are just here to let the community, Lagosians and Nigerians and everybody around the world to know that here in Trade Fair Market, you don’t have any problem between the traders, Chinese and the Nigerians here. Everything is fine,” he said.

The market was open and peaceful, according to a Chinese trader who also confirmed that business operations had resumed.

He referred to Nigeria as a large market and urged businessmen and consumers to keep visiting it to conduct business.
