Relationship counsellor Solomon Buchi generated outrage online after discussing his thoughts on the duties of husbands and wives in marriage, saying that a woman should never have to pay rent.
In a social media video, Buchi maintained that giving shelter is one of a husband’s essential responsibilities, portraying males as providers and guardians in the marriage.
“A woman should never have to pay rent. If you’re a man and you claim to be a husband, you should be able to provide at least shelter. You’re meant to be a provider and a protector,” he said.
He did, however, warn that such an arrangement comes with expectations for both parties.
According to the relationship coach, if a husband is entirely responsible for providing financial support, the woman should also accept typical domestic chores, such as housework.
“If you believe the man should exclusively provide, then you should exclusively be domesticated. If she wants an exclusive provider, you must demand an exclusive traditional woman. You can’t eat your cake and have it,” he added.
Buchi suggested that couples should agree on their roles before to marriage, rather than expecting customary rewards without obligations.
His words have elicited various reactions online. While some social media users agreed that marriage works best when couples understand their responsibilities, others contended that marriages should be based on partnership.
