I saw people run mad, dead bodies on streets — Fireboy DML on Lagos culture shock

Afrobeats musician Fireboy DML has talked candidly about the dread and cultural shock he had after moving to Lagos to follow his dream of being a professional musician.

The “Vibration” crooner recalled that his early experiences in the city were terrifying because he was exposed to situations and things that were new to him during a recent livestream.

Fireboy claimed that he was horrified after seeing someone run insane and discovering dead bodies on the streets.

When he initially came to Lagos, he also remembered being frightened by cultists and, more broadly, by the way some locals looked and behaved.

“I was so scared the first time I came to Lagos in 2016, in Surulere. People’s eyes were so red, and they looked scary. In two weeks, I saw someone run mad, dead bodies and cultists. Now, I also look like those scary people,” he said.

The singer claimed he refused to give up on his goals or go back home in spite of the initial shock. Rather, as he pursued his musical career, he gradually adjusted to the way of life and surroundings of Lagos.

Since entering the mainstream, Fireboy has recorded a number of hit songs and albums, solidifying his position as one of the leading voices in the Nigerian Afrobeats scene.
