A sudden power loss prompted fear at a Nigerian hostel as occupants attempted to kill a snake that had entered one of the rooms, resulting in a stressful and chaotic situation.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident took place in the evening when a snake was discovered in a hostel room shared by seven males.
Three men waited by, while another resident clutched a stick, ready to whack the snake.
The unexpected outage, blamed on the Nigerian Electricity Supply Company (NESCO/NEPA), left the men to fumble in the dark, exacerbating their panic.
Residents reported that the snake slithered around as they attempted to recover control, with some worrying they would inadvertently damage each other in the dark.
After many stressful minutes, power was restored, allowing the hostel’s residents to eventually find and drive the snake away.
Although no injuries were recorded, the episode has generated internet discussions on the dangers of unexpected power outages and the threats they bring in emergency situations.
Residents of Nigerian hostels have encouraged the electrical provider to provide more consistent service, stressing that unexpected outages can cause unnecessary accidents or panic.
