California mayor resigns as she admits acting as Chinese spy, running fake news website with ex-lover

Eileen Wang, the former mayor of Arcadia in California, has resigned after admitting in a federal plea deal that she acted as an illegal foreign agent for China.

According to court documents unsealed on Monday, Wang, 58, agreed with prosecutors that she worked in coordination with the People’s Republic of China to promote propaganda in the United States between 2020 and 2022.

She allegedly collaborated with her then-fiancé, Yaoning Sun, on a website called “U.S. News Center,” which presented itself as a news platform for Chinese Americans. Prosecutors, however, say it was used to disseminate state-directed messaging.

The plea agreement states that Wang and Sun allegedly followed directives from Chinese officials, posting pre-written propaganda content and reporting back analytics such as audience reach and engagement. In one instance, she was reportedly instructed to publish an article attributed to a Chinese official in the Los Angeles Times.

Authorities say the case highlights coordinated efforts to influence public opinion through online platforms, while Wang’s political career in Arcadia included her election to the city council in November 2022.
