CAF open probe following Nigeria-Algeria AFCON quarter-final fallout

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched a formal investigation into episodes of “unacceptable behaviour” during Nigeria’s 2-0 quarter-final victory against Algeria on Saturday in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria advanced to the semi-finals with a controlled performance at the Stade de Marrakech, with Victor Osimhen scoring early in the second half and setting up Akor Adams to seal the victory and maintain the Super Eagles’ flawless tournament record.

Despite the Super Eagles’ domination on the pitch, the match finished with mounting tensions.

Members of the Algerian camp showed their discontent with the officiating, resulting in heated arguments between players and officials from both sides following the final whistle.

CAF said that the Nigeria-Algeria match was not the only quarter-final being reviewed.

The governing body also criticised issues from Morocco’s 2-0 victory over Cameroon.

Cameroon officials were allegedly dissatisfied with several officiating decisions in the game, which concluded their AFCON campaign.

In an official statement issued on Monday, CAF stated that it had already collected match reports and video evidence from both matches.

Read the statement below;

“CAF has collected recent match reports and video evidence indicating potentially unacceptable behaviour from some players and officials and has opened an investigation into match incidents during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 quarter-final fixtures between Cameroon and Morocco, as well as Algeria and Nigeria,”

CAF also stated that the case had been referred to its Disciplinary Board, and that sanctions would be imposed if any personnel were found to have committed misconduct.

The governing board also stated that it is analysing footage of members of the media accused of misbehaving in the mixed zone area.

“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organisers,” the statement concluded.

While the enquiry continues in the background, attention shifts to the semi-finals. Nigeria will meet tournament hosts Morocco on Wednesday at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah in Rabat, with a spot in the final on the line.

Earlier that day, Senegal and Egypt would compete in the first semi-final at the Grand Stade de Tanger, paving the way for a decisive phase of the competition.
