Chukwuemeka Odumeje, a controversial priest, has generated outrage online after discussing his views on DNA tests and paternity in marriage.
Speaking during a sermon, the cleric recommended males to avoid DNA tests, emphasising that such activities contradict Igbo cultural ideas about family and fatherhood.
“Desist from doing DNA, It’s against Igbo culture. Any child born by your wife regardless of who’s responsible belongs to you as long as nobody is coming out to claim it,” he said.
According to him, as long as no one shows up to claim the child, a paternity test is unnecessary, as such procedures are considered taboo in Igbo culture.
While some backed him wholeheartedly, citing cultural norms and confidence in marriage, others strongly disagreed, claiming that DNA tests are necessary for clarity and truth.
One user wrote, “DNA tests don’t hurt anyone, I wouldn’t advise anyone to follow this advice.” Another added, “Where in Igbo culture is this? This man don start again.”
