Nigerian artist Habeeb Okikiola Badmus, also known as Portable, has criticised the country’s Christian leaders for their silence in the face of reported attacks on Christians.
His words came amid growing concern over claims of a new attack on Palm Sunday worshippers in Jos, Plateau State, purportedly carried out by paramilitary groups.
The event has rekindled disputes over allegations of targeted violence against Christians, which the Federal Government has previously refuted.
In a video released online, Portable criticised Nigerian pastors for failing to speak out or take action despite the situation.
He called their silence hypocritical, claiming that while many church leaders spend in personal protection measures like bulletproof automobiles, they have not publicly fought for their people.
The “Zazu” singer also questioned why religious leaders haven’t organised protests or taken a more prominent stand, expressing surprise at what he sees as apathy in the face of continued bloodshed.
He went on to imply that if a comparable issue affected Muslim communities, Islamic clerics would be more vocal about it, drawing parallels between religious leadership responses.
In a mixture of Yoruba and pidgin, read what he said below…
“Why are Nigerian pastors not fighting for Christians? They use bulletproof cars yet their followers are dying. Why can’t pastors lead protest to the Aso rock? You can’t harm a Muslim and there won’t be chaos. If you kill a traditionalist, there will be crisis. But if you kill a Christian, the pastor will look away and being enjoying in his car.”
