Yoruba Activist Igboho urges Nnamdi Kanu to sheath sword, seeks negotiation with FG

In order to address his ongoing legal and political issues, prominent Yoruba nation activist Sunday Igboho has advised Nnamdi Kanu, the arrested leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to engage in constructive negotiations with the Federal Government.

Igboho commended Kanu for formally ending the Monday sit-at-home order that has plagued the South-East for the previous five years in a statement issued on Friday and signed by his attorney, Pelumi Olajengbesi.

“Chief Sunday Adeyemo commends Mazi Kanu for ending the five-year Monday economic shutdown across the South-East,” the statement read. “This decision is a thoughtful step toward restoring stability in the region.”

Igboho asked Kanu to look into mediation and talks with the federal government in addition to rescinding the civil disobedience instruction.

He proposed that this kind of interaction would end the impasse over Kanu’s legal situation.

“Chief Igboho believes that dialogue and formal talks with the government could pave the way for a peaceful resolution, benefiting both parties and the region,” the statement added.

Igboho said he is confident that President Bola Tinubu’s current administration is amenable to dialogue.

He underlined that if both parties enter into talks with sincerity, a peaceful conclusion is possible.

While the right to self-determination remains fundamental for Mazi Kanu, the administration is predisposed to negotiation for the peace, security, and prosperity that the South-East deserves,”

Additionally, the statement denounced individuals who are purportedly profiting from the violence and instability in the Southeast.

Igboho demanded that the “desecration” of the area stop in order to facilitate economic revival.

The statements made by Sunday Igboho indicate that leading ethnic activists are increasingly calling for unity.

After Kanu was detained after being taken to Nigeria, IPOB initially announced the Monday sit-at-home in August 2021.

In the South-East, workplaces, schools, and marketplaces stayed closed during the shutdowns.

On November 20, 2025, Kanu was found guilty of terrorism-related charges and given a life sentence, which his family has promised to appeal.

At the Sokoto Correctional Centre, he is presently completing his term.
