The promotion of 14 High Chiefs and Baales in Oyo town to the position of crown-wearing Obas has been accepted by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
The Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, handed the Governor’s Staffs of Office and Instruments of Office at the coronation ceremony on Friday at Oliveth Heights in the Oyo West Local Government Area.
The recently crowned monarchs include Oba David Oyediran, the Alaaguo of Aguoland; Oba Afonja Mukaila, Baba Eyaji of Oyo; Oba Samuel Odurinde, the Alajagba of Oyo; Oba Isiaka Tella-Titiloye, the Ona-Isokun of Oyo; and Oba Fakayode Alowonle, the Onimileke of Imileke.
Oba Salawu Oyeniran is the Onigbudugbu of Gbudugbu; Oba Olaniyi Adegboye is the Oloodu of Ojongbodu; Oba Tijani Ajeigbe is the Alapa-Ara of Apa-Ara; and Oba Abel Oyekan is the Elepe of Iseke.
The elevation, according to Governor Makinde’s deputy, demonstrates his administration’s dedication to bolstering established institutions and fostering peace at the local level.
In addition to supporting government initiatives in their respective fields, he challenged the monarchs to lead with honesty, equity, and inclusivity.
Ademola Ojo, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, called the ceremony significant and pointed out that in Yoruba culture, the beaded crown represents authority, service, and cultural duty.
The development, however, coincides with a continuing legal dispute in which the Alaafin of Oyo has petitioned the Supreme Court to halt the Baale Ago-Oja chieftaincy’s recognition and elevation while an appeal is being heard. The matter has not yet been heard.
