Yvonne Maja, 25, of Ga-Rakgwatha, was found guilty of attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) by the Mokopane Regional Court in South Africa.
She was given an effective 20-year prison sentence. Maja was given two years in jail for assault with intent to cause serious bodily harm and eighteen years in prison for attempted murder. The sentences were to be served concurrently.
The State presented evidence during the trial that the accused and her ex-boyfriend, Mmapeu Hlanga, had a phone argument in Mogoto village on February 14, 2024.
She went to her ex-boyfriend’s homestead after work and discovered both of them.
After accusing her ex-boyfriend of adultery, she quickly grabbed a bottle filled with a liquid and spilt it on the complainant’s face and other body parts.
Her ex-boyfriend was also splattered with the liquid. The police were notified of the situation, and after an investigation, the accused was taken into custody. It was then established that acid had been sprayed on the victims.
The victim’s significant physical and psychological distress was detailed in a Victim Impact Statement prepared by Court Preparation Officer Maela Lebogang and delivered by State Prosecutor Rakoma Dibuleng Christina as part of the aggravation of punishment.
The State claimed that the complainant was permanently disfigured as a result of the accused’s refusal to accept the breakup.
The complainant’s life has been irrevocably changed, the court heard, including her capacity to move around her community without experiencing any difficulties.
The State further claimed that the accused failed to exhibit sincere regret and was dishonest in court when she entered a guilty plea, which the State rejected.
