The schedule for the general elections in 2027 has been made public by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). At a news conference in Abuja on Friday, Professor Joash Amupitan, the chairman of INEC, announced the schedule.

Governorship and state assembly elections will be held on March 6, 2027, while the presidential and national parliament elections would be held on February 20, 2027, according to Amupitan.

According to Amupitan, the commission was ready for the exercise.

The terms of the President, Vice-President, Governors, and Deputy Governors of the Federation’s states—with the exception of Anambra State, Bayasa State, Edo States, Ekiti States, Imo State, Ogi, Kondo, and National States—will end on May 28, 2027, in accordance with the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution as amended.

On June 8, 2021, the National and State Assemblies’ membership will be disbanded.

According to Sections 76(2), 116(2), 132(2), and 178(2) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 Constitution as amended, elections for the aforementioned positions must take place no sooner than 150 days nor later than 30 days prior to the holders’ terms ending.
