Woman returns N330M mistakenly credited to her bank account

In an unprecedented act of honesty, a Nigerian woman named Aisha Isah Yelwa has refunded N330 million that was incorrectly credited to her bank account.

Mrs. Yelwa, a small-scale trader from Lapai, Niger State, stated that she discovered an unexpected sum in her First Bank account at 3:49 p.m. on Monday, December 29, 2025.

She added that the finding came shortly after she complained to the bank about repeated deductions related to earlier loans she had taken to support her business.

According to her, she was only checking her account to see whether the debit issue had been rectified when she noticed a figure much exceeding anything she had ever owned.

She claimed there was no credit alert, no transaction description, and no clear indication of where the funds originated from.

“In order to be sure it wasn’t a display error, I made a transaction of N1 million from the account, and there was still no credit alert. That was when I became more confused and worried,” she told Lapai TV.

Mrs. Yelwa stated that she did not immediately raise the alarm until Tuesday morning, when she went to the Lapai branch of First Bank to officially report the irregularities.

She stated that the branch manager appreciated her honesty after ascertaining that the monies were the product of a system fault and immediately began the reversal process.

Despite her decision, she admitted that several members of the public criticised her, questioning why she chose to return the money rather than retain it.

To protect herself legally, she said she went to the bank with a lawyer to verify the entire process was properly documented.

She stated that the bank told her that she would not be held liable for the error and would only be contacted if more explanation was required.

Mrs. Yelwa expressed satisfaction with her decision, which was based on ethics and concern for her children’s future.

“I feel good returning the money. I am a mother, and my children’s future means more to me than anything,” she told Lapai TV. “Even with all my financial challenges, I don’t want to eat what does not belong to me,” she added.
