It’s an insult to Nigerians, rule of law for Tinubu to insist on implementing new tax law — Lawyer Adeyanju

Deji Adeyanju, an activist lawyer, has criticised President Bola Tinubu for planning to implement Nigeria’s new Tax Reform Act on January 1, despite ongoing legal and political disputes.

Adeyanju criticised the President’s choice to proceed with the law, claiming that unresolved charges surrounding its approval create severe constitutional and governance problems.

The lawyer termed the execution of the tax law amid allegations of forgeries and procedural irregularities as a direct attack on Nigeria’s judicial system.

According to Adeyanju, pursuing the approach without resolving the issues diminishes public trust in democratic institutions and the rule of law.

He also stated that different versions of the Tax Reform Act exist inside government circles.

According to reports, the version being prepared for gazetting differs from the paper that President Tinubu signed into law.

Adeyanju responded with a post on X, publicly questioning the President’s capacity to act unilaterally on crucial budgetary issues.

“For President Tinubu to insist on implementing the disputed Tax Reform Act from today Jan 1, despite the controversies and issues of forgery/breaches of the constitutional process is an insult to the Nigerian nation and the concept of rule of law,” he wrote.

He further asked, “Where did President Tinubu also get the power to unilaterally write off NNPC debts?”

The federal government has yet to respond to Adeyanju’s charges, while the tax code discussion continues across the country.
