“Why can’t a man wash plate?” – Teniola Aladese challenges gender roles in homes

Teniola Aladese, a Nollywood actress, has triggered a new debate about gender roles and domestic labour by questioning why, despite shifting social and economic realities, household tasks are still widely viewed as a woman’s responsibility.

During a podcast interview, the actress blasted what she saw as outmoded expectations imposed on women in relationships and marriage.

Why can’t a man wash plate? Like, why do we keep perpetuating these gender stereotypes?” she asked. “A woman will cook, wash plate, and the man will just work. But women also work. We go out there, we hustle just like them.”

She noted that the inequality is even more pronounced at home, where women are frequently expected to perform all domestic responsibilities regardless of their professional obligations.

Why is it that the moment we come home, it’s the woman that has to do everything? Cook, clean, wash… everything!” she said.

Aladese agreed that prior generations may have accepted such roles, but he argued that present conditions necessitate a shift in thinking.

Our mothers might have done it, but times have changed. Both genders are working now. So why can’t the man help with the plates?” she asked.

She emphasised that household contributions should not be associated with masculinity or ego.

It’s not about being less of a man. It’s about partnership. Stop with these stereotypes,” she said.

In her closing remarks, the actress emphasised the toll that uneven domestic labour imposes on women.

Women are tired. We work too. Let’s share the load,” she said.

Her words have rekindled debates about domestic equality, marital partnership, and the need to reinterpret traditional gender norms in modern partnerships.
