A woman went viral after a video of her complaining about the bridal price custom went viral.
In the video, X user @mazi_chinonso1 asks why a custom that was supposed to celebrate marriage has turned into a barrier for many young men and women.
Because they cannot afford the bride price, many men who are eager to get married are unable to do so, the young woman bemoaned.
She added that some women are reaching the age of 35 without getting married, not because there aren’t any suitable men available, but rather because of the practice’s financial burden.
She questioned the practice’s beginnings, pointing out that God gave Adam a wife at no cost.
She claims that the custom of paying a bride price runs counter to God’s intended simplicity in marriage.
The woman went on to criticise some societies for treating marriage like a business, enumerating numerous conditions as though the groom were “purchasing” the bride instead of getting married.

“God gave Adam wife for free. I don’t know who bring the idea of bride price. Now some of our guys are due for marriage but no money for bride price. Some of our girls are heading to 35 years, no be say man no dey but no money for bride price. Una start where God stop. Make una leave that bride price matter. Some of our girls today are getting old because of what? bride price. Not be say man no dey. God wey carry wife give Adam for free, him tell you say he no know wetin him dey do? Una now come change the idea. You go see for some community, if you won marry their girls, dem go carry list wey full everywhere give you as if you won buy the girl whereas na wife u dey marry u no dey buy am. Make una change the idea of bride price, I beg make girls marry many don dey old for dia papa house.”
