We had been married for five years, and I honestly thought he wasn’t serious.
Before my promotion, he earned almost double what I made. But we never split our bills equally because I was still paying off my student loans, and he always said we should contribute based on what we could afford.
When he lost his job two years ago, I covered almost everything for seven months — rent, groceries, electricity, car insurance, and even some of his personal expenses.
I never complained because I thought that’s what marriage was about.
When I finally got a job paying $120,000 a year, I was excited. I thought we could finally save more, clear our remaining debts, and start planning to buy a house.
Instead, my husband sat me down and told me that starting next month, we would split every household bill 50/50.
I asked why we suddenly needed an equal split when he had always earned more than me.
He said, “Because now you can afford it. I don’t see why I should keep paying more when we both have good jobs.”
I reminded him that I never asked him to pay me back for the seven months I supported him.
He looked at me and said, “That was your choice. You didn’t do it because I forced you to.”
That response hurt more than I expected.
