A 59-year-old woman lost her life after falling nearly 100 feet from a steep hiking trail in Brazil while reportedly applying insect repellent.

Rosemary Suzart Garcia was part of a large hiking group exploring Grutas do Spar in Maricá on Sunday, June 14, when the tragic incident occurred. According to reports, she had stepped onto a short path near a lookout point and lost her balance while raising her leg to spray insect repellent.

A witness, Giovani Maximino, told local media that the hiking guide made a desperate attempt to save Garcia as she began to fall. He said the guide reached for her arm and nearly went over the edge as well.

“The guide tried to hold her and almost fell too,” Maximino said, adding that the guide “threw himself towards her” but only managed to hold onto a “root in the area.”

“It’s a height of approximately [100 feet]. She was just finishing applying insect repellent. It was very fast.”

Maximino stated that Garcia, who was from Rio de Janeiro, had been wearing safety equipment, including gloves, a helmet, and other protective gear at the time of the accident.

Emergency responders later recovered her body from the scene.

“I only managed to locate the children, who live in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, at almost two in the morning to give them the news,” Maximino said.

“Until then, we had no contact with any family member.”

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal fall.

The incident occurred a day after another fatal accident in Brazil involving 21-year-old bungee jumper Maria Eduardo Rodrigues de Freitas, who reportedly fell about 130 feet from a bridge in Limeira, São Paulo, after staff allegedly failed to attach a bungee cord before her jump on Saturday, June 13.
