Werder Bremen admitted that signing Victor Boniface was a’mistake’.

The Nigerian forward signed on loan with high expectations, but has struggled owing to fitness issues, which have hampered his effectiveness.

Boniface was brought in to provide power and skill to Bremen’s attack, but persistent fitness difficulties have derailed his objectives.

The striker has battled to regain full match sharpness, making only 11 Bundesliga appearances, primarily from the bench, without scoring and giving two assists.

His restricted availability has left the team lacking the attacking presence they had hoped for, exposing gaps in the club’s forward lineup.

Fritz admitted the club’s strategy has not produced the intended results.

“We said we wanted to be bold. We wanted to rely on young players. And certainly not everything went according to plan. We can’t absolve ourselves of making mistakes,” he said.

“On the one hand, we wanted to develop Keke, and on the other hand, we also wanted to acquire the quality that Victor undoubtedly possesses. As things stand now, we have to say that it hasn’t worked out in that form.

“We wanted to take a manageable financial risk and have the courage to see the opportunity.”

The remark comes amid a bigger issue with Bremen’s squad planning, in which ambition has not converted into on-field performance.

Boniface is unlikely to play a significant role for the rest of the season, and an extension seems improbable.
