“Very unprofessional” – Omotola Jalade backs Kunle Afolayan, slams dancing culture to sell movies

Veteran Nollywood actress and filmmaker Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has stirred new debate in the Nigerian film business by openly condemning the growing trend of dancing on social media to promote films.

During a recent interview with TVC Entertainment, the actress stated unequivocally that dancing should not be required to publicise films.

During the interview, Omotola remarked that she cannot bring herself to dance solely to promote a movie, emphasising that such an attitude does not match with her sense of professionalism.

“I’m sorry, but I won’t be dancing to market or promote my movie. It’s not professional. I’ve done the movie, now I just have to go around and promote it,” she said.

She believes that promotion should take place through regulated and professional channels rather than relying on forced social media trends. Omotola’s comments came amid an ongoing feud between filmmaker Kunle Afolayan and box office powerhouse Funke Akindele.

Afolayan previously declared that he would not dance to promote a movie and is not interested in making a ₦1 billion film if the producer just receives ₦10 million in return.

Kunle Afolayan’s statements drew criticism online, particularly from top box office performers Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham.

Funke Akindele’s and Toyin Abraham’s films have grossed over ₦2.4 billion and ₦1 billion, respectively, making them prominent players in modern film promotion.

Omotola agreed with Afolayan and stated that she only dances when she feels like it, not because it is a commercial responsibility.

She emphasised that a filmmaker’s first obligation is to produce a quality film, and that promotion should not jeopardise professionalism or personal beliefs.

Omotola made the statement while promoting her new film, Mother’s Love, which will be released on March 6, 2026.

The actress, who presently divides her time between Nigeria and the United States, stated that she prioritises excellent narrative over trends.
