Workers removed the name of U.S. President Donald Trump from the facade of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday after a federal judge ruled that the renaming of the venue was unlawful.

In a legal filing, the center’s Executive Director, Matt Floca, said that all physical signage bearing Trump’s name had been removed from the building and its grounds. At one point during the process, the exterior sign remained covered with a white tarp while workers carried out the removal.

The action followed a court decision rejecting a last-minute attempt by the center’s board to stop the removal. The ruling was seen as a setback for efforts to associate Trump’s name with the institution following his return to the White House.

Crowds reportedly gathered outside the arts center on Friday evening as workers installed scaffolding to remove the signage, while many others watched the process through online livestreams.

According to Floca, thunderstorms delayed the work because of safety concerns for workers, and the removal was expected to be completed during the early hours of the morning.

The order was issued by U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper, who ruled on May 29 that the renaming of the Kennedy Center after Trump was unlawful. Cooper stated that only the United States Congress has the authority to change the venue’s name and directed that Trump’s name be removed from the building and all related materials within 14 days. The Kennedy Center had already removed Trump’s name from its website earlier in the week.
