“They took my passport and made me sign papers I didn’t…” – Nigerian man cries out after being forced into Russian Army

A Nigerian man has asked the federal government to intervene after saying he was duped into entering the Russian military under false pretences.

The individual, Abubakar Adamu, reportedly flew to Moscow on a tourist visa provided by the Russian Embassy in Abuja on October 16, 2025.

Adamu thought he had landed a civilian position as a sentry, according to Zagazola Makama, a counter-terrorism journal.

Adamu’s passport and travel documents were allegedly confiscated when he arrived.

His legal team claims he was compelled to sign recruitment documents written entirely in Russian, with no translation or interpreter, and only afterward discovered he had been drafted into the Russian military.

Adamu is currently stationed at a Russian military camp and has reportedly refused deployment to conflict zones in Ukraine, putting him in a hazardous situation away from home.

This instance comes amid increased alarm over accusations that African nationals are being recruited into Russia’s military under dubious conditions.

Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence has revealed that two Nigerian males, Hamzat Kazeem Kolawole, 42, and Mbah Stephen Udoka, 38, died in the Luhansk region in late November 2025 after reportedly being recruited into the Russian military.

CNN and other media outlets have reported that people from Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda were attracted to Russia with promises of civilian jobs like driving or security.

Some were allegedly pressured into military duty and deployed to the front lines with no training.

In response, Russian Ambassador to Nigeria Andrey Podyelyshev rejected the Kremlin’s involvement in such recruitment schemes, dismissing the charges earlier this week.
