A heartbroken mother in Kano State, Northwest Nigeria, has accused authorities at St. Louis Secondary School, a boarding/day school, of putting her 14-year-old daughter, Maimuna, also known as Hanil, to a punishment that culminated in her death.

In a viral video circulating on social media, the heartbroken mom burst into tears as she described how her daughter, Nihal Usaman Shamaki, allegedly collapsed after being forced to kneel for hours under the blazing heat for failing to attend an early morning Muslim prayer session.

According to the mother, the event took place last Saturday, when the youngster was allegedly compelled to kneel on a stony surface from dawn until evening as punishment for missing the prayer.

She stated that after continuously begging for water while experiencing the punishment, her daughter was denied access to drinking water, causing her to collapse.

“My daughter was pleading for water, but they refused to give her any,” the mother said while sobbing. “She later collapsed and was rushed to the hospital where a doctor pronounced her dead.”

The heartbroken lady also claimed that school officials first withheld the exact circumstances of her daughter’s death.

“At first, I had resigned to fate when they lied to me about the circumstances of her demise,” she replied. “But I prayed to God to expose what actually happened, and it’s now clear that my daughter was tortured to death.”

According to her, she was first persuaded to believe a different version of events until classmates who allegedly observed the assault came forward with details.

She claimed eyewitnesses testified that the dead was subjected to protracted punishment in extreme heat before collapsing.

The mother also described her own experience on the day tragedy hit.

“That same Saturday, I was on admission receiving treatment when I received a call that my daughter had been admitted into an intensive care unit,” she said. “I had to jump out of my own sick bed and rush there.”
