Matías Almeyda, the head coach of Sevilla, has justified his last-minute choice to substitute Alexis Sánchez with Nigerian striker Akor Adams during Sunday’s 1-1 La Liga tie with Girona.
The modification was done to optimise influence in the match’s pivotal phase, he argues.
Adams was substituted in the 74th minute at Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium with Sevilla behind 1-0.
In an attempt to capitalise on the Chilean forward’s expertise, Almeyda decided to bring on Sánchez as the home team stepped up their efforts to equalise.
The tactical change was criticised by several home support members who believed Adams’ physical presence may have been crucial as Sevilla advanced.
However, when defender Kike Salas scored late to erase Girona’s lead, the home team finally managed to rescue a draw.
After the game, Almeyda addressed the decision, emphasising that Sánchez was brought in especially to impact games at pivotal points.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Sevilla coach stated, “Alexis had to play that decisive part of the game, because that’s what he came for.”
Almeyda denied that Sevilla’s attacking threat was diminished by Adams’ dismissal, claiming that the team’s problems in front of goal extended beyond the absence of a conventional striker.
“With or without a reference point, they haven’t scored a header because, in addition, the crosses aren’t the best,” he added.
Adams has been one of Sevilla’s most important players in recent weeks, even though he was substituted.
In his previous five La Liga games, the Nigerian striker has scored four goals and provided one assist, becoming a vital part of the team’s recent strong surge.
His efforts have kept Sevilla’s season goals alive by assisting them in overcoming relegation fears and staying within striking distance of the European qualifying spots.
Sevilla is left with conflicted emotions after the draw: disappointment over lost chances and inspiration from their late-game comeback.
