Laporta resigns as Barcelona begin process of electing new President

Following Joan Laporta’s resignation, which was required by club laws for candidates running for reelection, Barcelona officially began the process of choosing a new president.

Laporta has resigned to allow him to run in the March 15 presidential election, the club said in a statement released Monday.

With this development, the club’s four-year leadership will be decided through an official election procedure.

Barcelona affirmed that Laporta’s choice was required by club election regulations and was not his own.

Read the statement below;

“In accordance with Article 42.f of the FC Barcelona Statutes, president Joan Laporta has stepped down from his position in order to be eligible to stand in the elections to the Board of Directors, which will be held on 15 March,”

The resignation was “formally announced at the regular meeting of the Board of Directors this Monday, where the election call was formally released,” the club continued.

Laporta had already stated his desire to run for reelection and had previously declared the election date last month. Laporta is not the only high-ranking official to quit.

Nine additional board members have also resigned, according to Barcelona, since they plan to run for office again.

The club announced that vice-presidents Elena Fort and Rafael Escudero, as well as directors Ferran Oliver, Josep Maria Albert, Javier Barbany, Miquel Camps, Aureli Mas, Javier Puig, Joan Soler i Ferré, and others, had also resigned their positions to participate in the election process.

Due to their departures, an interim board has been established to manage daily operations until the elections are over.

Josep Cubells has been named vice president and secretary, while Rafael Yuste, a former vice president, has been chosen interim president. Josep Ignasi Macià, Àngel Riudalbas, Joan Solé i Sust, and Sisco Pujol round out the temporary board, with Alfons Castro serving as treasurer.

Now that the election schedule is in effect, Barcelona is going through a period of administrative and political transformation.

Whether Laporta receives another mandate or the club changes direction under new leadership will be determined by the vote on March 15.
