Godiya Akwashiki, a former senator from Nasarawa North Senatorial District, has died at the age of 52, marking a sad period in the state’s political history.
Family members reported on Thursday that Akwashiki died on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at a hospital in India where he was receiving medical treatment.
According to sources, the legislator suffered from a long-term sickness that worsened after his re-election in 2023.
He apparently had therapy in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and India, though the specifics of his condition were not revealed.
Akwashiki was first elected to the Senate in 2019 and will serve a second term in 2023 on the Social Democratic Party platform.
He became the only Nasarawa North senator to win two consecutive terms since the state’s inception. Before joining the National Assembly, he was a member of the Nasarawa State Assembly for multiple times. During his stint in the state legislature, he advanced to the positions of Majority Leader and then Deputy Speaker.
Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area, Akwashiki established a solid grassroots political base.
In the Senate, he prioritised rural development, education, youth empowerment, and infrastructure throughout Nasarawa North.
Political allies and community leaders have condemned his death as a significant loss for Nasarawa State and the country. The family has not yet revealed the specifics of his burial plans.
