Real Madrid cool Rodri interest ahead of Man City clash

Despite their long-standing respect for Manchester City’s midfielder, Real Madrid have apparently eliminated Rodri from their immediate summer transfer wishlist.

The announcement comes on the eve of another high-profile European clash between the two clubs, a rivalry that has become one of the most defining constants of the contemporary Champions League era.

Madrid is still looking to reinforce their midfield ahead of next season, but reports in Spain suggest the 29-year-old is no longer a major target as the club reshapes its recruitment plan.

Instead, club management are looking for younger midfielders who fit into the Bernabéu’s long-term team plans.

Among the candidates receiving attention is Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, who has emerged as a serious prospect following an outstanding ascent in the Premier League.

Madrid scouts are also watching Kees Smit of AZ Alkmaar and Vitinha of Paris Saint-Germain. The Spanish giants are also looking to rebuild their midfield after a strong period spearheaded by Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

Rodri’s contract with Manchester City expires in June 2027, and club officials are allegedly eager to secure an extension as the midfielder continues to play a key role in Pep Guardiola’s system.

As Guardiola’s long-term ambitions at the Etihad Stadium remain undetermined, speculation about his future has risen.

Rodri’s camp, on the other hand, has downplayed speculation about a possible transfer. His father, Antonio Hernandez, responded to the rumours during an appearance at the National Sports Awards.

“He is very comfortable where he is,” Hernandez said. “You will understand the natural reserve in these circumstances. I don’t know anything and I’m saying it truthfully. I don’t know anything, history has to be written. He is crazy about going to the World Cup.”

Rodri has lately recovered to form following injury setbacks earlier this season, participating in 11 consecutive Premier League games.

His absence from the campaign, including a league phase Champions League visit to Madrid, reportedly created a schism between the player and the Spanish club during a critical scouting period.
