As coworkers and admirers lament the passing of legendary actor Taiwo Hassan, well known by his stage name Ogogo, Nollywood actress Funke Akindele has come under fire online for posting birthday images on Monday, August 24.

The 49-year-old actress posted glitzy pictures and a thank-you prayer to God on social media. She expressed gratitude to God for providing her with strength and protection during many seasons, difficulties, errors, and successes.

Some social media users, however, disagreed with the timing of the post, believing that because the Yoruba film industry is in grief for the legendary actor, she ought to have moderated her birthday celebration.

One social media user, Ayofe, questioned the timing of the post, writing, “Shey you no dey read the room no? Na birthday be the next thing to dey post?”

Another user, Olayinka Mujeeb Aden, criticised the actress, saying, “Aunty Funke, shame on you! We are mourning the death of Ogogo. And you dey post about birthday. Omo, this is not fair”.

Following Taiwo Hassan’s passing, Funke had earlier sent a condolence message; nonetheless, some critics argued that her birthday celebration was callous in light of the situation.

Reactions to the outrage have been divided; some people have called on the actress to halt her public celebration, while others have pointed out that grieving and celebrating a birthday can coexist.

Kanel wrote, “If I were you, Aunty Funke, I woulda forgo the celebration of my birth for the year. Today should be all about the passing of Ogogo. But we are not the same person. Happy birthday to you, and I wish you long life in good health. I wish for you to continue to prosper.”
