The Delta State Police Command has paraded Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman and four other officers in connection with the killing of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun.
According to Vanguard on Sunday, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, after operatives attached to the Area Command in Effurun were deployed to the scene where Ogidi had been apprehended by members of the public. He was reportedly accused of attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.
ASP Usman, who led the team, allegedly discharged his firearm in violation of Force Order 237, leading to the death of the suspect. Following an internal investigation, the Nigeria Police Force dismissed Usman alongside three other officers implicated in the incident.
Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, confirmed that the officers would face prosecution. He added that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, approved their dismissal and has forwarded the recommendation to the Police Service Commission for ratification.
Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, had earlier ordered Usman’s immediate arrest and transfer to the State Headquarters in Asaba for preliminary investigation. He was subsequently moved to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he appeared before the Force Disciplinary Committee.
Findings from the police panel indicated that Usman “acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms.”
The killing, which was captured in a viral video, sparked widespread outrage across social media platforms. Reacting to the development, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, described the shooting as “not explainable” and “not pardonable,” assuring the public that justice would be served.
CP Oyeniyi also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, reiterating the Command’s zero tolerance for “lawlessness, recklessness, and extra-judicial conduct.”
The dismissed officers are expected to be handed over to appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges related to unlawful homicide.
