Osimhen scores as Galatasaray brush aside Başakşehir to extend title lead

Galatasaray improved their chances of winning the Turkish Süper Lig title with a 3-0 victory over İstanbul Başakşehir on Saturday.

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen was among the goals as the league leaders grabbed control of the second half at RAMS Park to preserve their lead at the top of the table.

The match remained closely balanced until the 56th minute, when Başakşehir defender Festy Ebosele was sent off for his second yellow card, forcing the visitors to play with ten men.

Galatasaray promptly utilised their numerical advantage.

Wilfried Singo broke the deadlock just one minute after being dismissed, heading home Noa Lang’s cross.

The hosts increased their lead in the 66th minute when Osimhen scored clinically after a well-timed through cross from Yunus Akgün.

Osimhen’s strike basically put the game out of reach and extended the Nigerian international’s outstanding scoring streak in the Turkish top division this season.

Galatasaray’s third goal came late in the game, when replacement Renato Nhaga scored.

The goal was momentarily examined by VAR before being confirmed, ensuring an easy victory for the home team.

The triumph boosts Galatasaray to 64 points after 26 league games, seven points ahead of title contender Fenerbahçe.

With eight games remaining in the season, manager Okan Buruk’s team is comfortably on track to win another league title.

Galatasaray will now turn their attention to European competition, travelling to face Liverpool in a critical UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second leg.
