Following claims that Linus Williams, also known as BLord, was granted release under the condition, a Nigerian attorney has caused a stir online by defining “self-recognizance bail.”
Many Nigerians were able to comprehend why some people are released without a surety while others are not after the attorney explained the legal phrase in plain English.
BLord was granted release on self-recognizance, a legal word that left many Nigerians perplexed and looking for answers online, according to earlier reports.
The attorney clarified that the choice is not based on monetary guarantees or sureties, but rather on the accused person’s perceived credibility and level of confidence in society.
He compared the conventional bail system, which requires suspects to provide a surety—someone who would be held accountable if they fail to appear in court—with self-recognizance bail.
He claims that those with low incomes frequently find it difficult to comply with bail requirements since they are thought to be more inclined to flee, which makes sureties necessary in such situations.
On the other hand, under self-recognizance bail, the court releases an individual on the basis of their standing, reputation, and perceived dependability, subject to relatively minor requirements such giving up travel documents.
Read his words below:
“So BLord has been granted bail, and he was granted bail on self-recognizance. I’m not prophet but I know many Nigerians are confused and asking, ‘What does self-recognizance mean?’ I’m here to explain it to you.
Normally, if you’re poor… they will say bring surety… that surety is somebody that will take you on bail…
Because you’re poor, they don’t usually trust you…
But self-recognizance is now: ‘We know you, we know you have a lot of businesses, you cannot possibly leave them and run away… you are enough surety for yourself.’
So go. But we trust you to be coming to court.
The moral lesson of this video is: hustle o! Don’t ever be broke. Nobody will trust you. If you’re broke and something gets missing, you’re number one suspect. You have to hustle.”
