Okocha backs Osimhen, Lookman clash as sign of winning mentality

Jay-Jay Okocha, a Super Eagles great, has downplayed worries about Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman’s on-field disagreement, claiming that such times can assist rather than hinder the Nigerian squad.

The incident occurred during Nigeria’s round-of-16 triumph against Mozambique at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, in which both forwards had already scored.

The brief altercation, which occurred midway through the second half, aroused concerns among fans and players about unity inside the Super Eagles camp.

Tensions escalated in the 63rd minute when a potential attacking play failed. Full-back Bruno Onyemaechi, who was high up the pitch, decided to shoot rather than release Osimhen, who was unmarked on the right.

When the ball eventually fell to Lookman, the Atalanta winger preferred to recycle possession rather than press his advantage.

Osimhen reacted angrily, telling his teammate that “this is a team game,” to which Lookman pointed out that Osimhen had already scored twice.

Captain Wilfred Ndidi sought to calm the Napoli attacker, but Osimhen remained unimpressed and was replaced shortly thereafter.

Speaking on the Clutch 9 Podcast, Okocha stated that such interactions represent desire rather than divisiveness.

“These things happen, and I love to see that sometimes in a team,” Okocha said. “It shows they want to win. They’re not just there to play and go home.”

The AFCON 1994 winner admitted that Osimhen’s response crossed the line, but emphasised that the underlying sentiment was positive.

“Osimhen went over the board, and that needs to be said. But it’s good to see players who are passionate and hungry. At the same time, you have to respect your teammate. If there’s an issue, sort it out in the dressing room, not in public.”

Nigeria has already moved on from the incident and is now focusing on their semi-final match against hosts Morocco on Wednesday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
