“Nigerians will happily pay £15,000 for a useless one-year Master’s” — Space scientist criticises attitude to university fees

Nigerian space scientist Dr. Temidayo Oniosun has criticised Nigerians who, according to him, are willing to pay high tuition fees for postgraduate programmes abroad while resisting comparatively lower university fees in Nigeria.

Oniosun expressed his views in a post on X on Monday, September 14, 2026, where he described what he considers a contradiction in the attitude of some Nigerians toward education costs.

‘Bunch of ungrateful and entitled people’

According to the space scientist, some Nigerians are willing to spend thousands of pounds on a one-year Master’s programme in the United Kingdom but object to paying significantly less for undergraduate education in Nigeria.

He wrote:

“Nigerians will happily pay £15,000 for tuition in the UK for a useless one year Masters program but paying £500 for a 5yr Bachelors degree in Nigeria is where they draw the line. Bunch of ungrateful and entitled people,”

His comment has sparked discussion about university funding, tuition fees, the quality of education in Nigeria and the willingness of Nigerians to spend more on education abroad than at home.

The debate also highlights broader concerns about the cost of higher education and the factors that influence Nigerians’ preference for studying outside the country.
