Ahead of the 2027 Presidential election, Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, believes Ndigbos should not be coerced into voting for a specific candidate, but should be free to vote for whomever they want.

Onaiyekan made the statement while speaking to reporters in Enugu on Thursday, September 24 2026.

The cleric was asked to comment on Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo’s recent call for voters in the region to vote based on the competence of the candidates running for office, rather than emotion. Soludo is backing President Tinubu’s re-election.

‘’I don’t know what Soludo has told Ndigbo but all I can say i that Ndigbo should be allowed to freely choose who should be their President and it is not the duty of Governors to tell people how they should vote. The governors will have their own votes. Every governor will vote for himself. Let others do. That is the only opportunity that we have ti express our mind’’
